What do Hakurei Salad Turnips Taste Like?
Magic. Ok, ok, ummm…objectively, they are mild in flavor, sweet, crunchy, refreshing, a wee bit of tang when raw but absolutely no bitterness, no sharpness unlike even a mild radish. When they are cooked they are sweet and buttery without any additional components so I’d recommend sticking to a simple preparation like this. You don’t need to peel them, or fuss with them at all, they are ready to roll!
Grilled Herby Salad Turnip Ingredients
This just couldn’t be any easier to throw together. You’ll need 5-6 bunches of Hakurei Salad Turnips, approximately 1 pound, with their greens removed (don’t throw them away, check out this post for some ideas on how to use them, they are delicious!) In addition to the turnips, you’ll need some olive oil, fresh herbs of your choice (parsley and dill are delicious together), salt and pepper. A grilling basket would come in handy, but you can just place the turnips directly on the grill and just turn them cautiously so you don’t lose them between the grates! Ps I just added the grilling basket to my shopping cart too.
What kind of herbs should I use? Can I use dried?
Honestly, this is a very personal decision! I find myself gravitating towards dill or chives for these, but thyme is delicious as well. I personally align rosemary more for hearty potato dishes and winter stews. Some ideas would be dill, basil, thyme, rosemary, oregano, chives, summer savory. Use what you have on hand in your fridge or garden and mix it up next time! Don’t have fresh herbs on hand? That’s ok too, feel free to use dried herbs, simple stir them into the oil and then rub your turnips with the herby oil prior to cooking vs if you’re using fresh you’ll add the herbs to the turnips when they’re done cooking.
